The truth is, however, that hearing loss is globally a very common condition. A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">round <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/deafness-and-hearing-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">466 million people worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have disabling hearing loss (6.1% of the world\u2019s population), and 34 million of these are children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue of hearing loss can be difficult to get your head around. When expanded to hearing loss in at least one ear, that figure becomes 1 in 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common form of hearing loss, affecting roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/50276-Common-causes-of-sensorineural-hearing-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine out of ten people with hearing loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some people experience sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), occurring when you lose your hearing very quickly (instantly or over a few days) and usually in just one ear. However,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensorineural_hearing_loss#Research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only 10-15% of the cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diagnosed as SSHL have an identifiable cause. Most cases are classified as idiopathic (with unknown cause). Amongst patients with SSHL, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5379569\/#:~:text=Even%20the%20natural%20course%20of,%25%20%5B24%E2%80%9326%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30-60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are estimated to have a spontaneous recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinnitus, the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, whistling, or other noises that have no outside source is also prevalent amongst Americans. In fact, roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-hearing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of the U.S. adult population, or about 25 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has experienced tinnitus lasting at least five minutes in the past year alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Hearing_Loss_in_Adults\"><b>Hearing Loss in Adults\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/quick-statistics-hearing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and over report some trouble hearing. This might be largely due to hearing loss having a range of possible causes, one of which is noise damage (a leading cause).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hearinghealthfoundation.org\/hearing-loss-tinnitus-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 million U.S. workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are exposed to hazardous noise levels, putting them at risk of developing noise-induced hearing loss. While employers are legally required to provide their employees with sufficient training and safety equipment, they often fail to do this, jeopardizing their workers\u2019 health. Although noise-induced hearing loss is the only entirely preventable form of hearing loss, it is also permanent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some professions present much more risk than others, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hearinghealthfoundation.org\/hearing-loss-tinnitus-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">musicians are 400% more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have a hearing loss and 57% more likely to have tinnitus than the general public. Tinnitus and hearing loss are also the top two service-connected disabilities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hearinghealthfoundation.org\/hearing-loss-tinnitus-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among veterans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other occupational areas with an increased risk factor include manufacturing, construction, entertainment and nightlife, and farming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender plays an interesting role in hearing loss. Adult men in their 50s are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/52814-Hearing-loss-statistics-at-a-glance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times as likely to have hearing loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than women of the same age. However, in older age, hearing loss rates become similar between the sexes. Also, as women age, they can generally have more difficulty hearing at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/52814-Hearing-loss-statistics-at-a-glance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower frequencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Hearing_Loss_in_Children\"><b>Hearing Loss in Children<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three million children in the U.S <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a hearing loss, with over a million under the age of three. Hearing loss occurs in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five out of every 1,000 newborns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and interestingly, over 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never too young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have their hearing tested<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and can be screened at birth. In 2017, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/hearingloss\/data.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 98% of U.S. newborns were screened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for hearing loss. In the same year, around 6,500 U.S. infants were identified early with permanent hearing loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to find out if a child has hearing loss as soon as possible, as it can slow development and their ability to speak. A child with hearing loss requires extra assistance and could benefit from a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid or a cochlear implant. The importance of proper care should be emphasized by the fact that even a mild hearing loss can cause a child to miss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as much as 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of classroom discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-planned methods of teaching and tailored learning provisions are crucial seeing as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/52814-Hearing-loss-statistics-at-a-glance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fifteen percent of school-age children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aged six to nineteen) have some degree of hearing loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Facts_About_Hearing_Loss_Causes\"><strong>Facts About Hearing Loss Causes<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing loss that occurs as you age is called presbycusis, and it is one of the biggest causes of hearing loss. In the United States, the prevalence of hearing loss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6457651\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubles with every 10-year increase in age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also the strongest predictor of hearing loss among adults, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/52814-Hearing-loss-statistics-at-a-glance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">91% of adults with hearing loss are aged 50 and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately one in three people in the United States <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/age-related-hearing-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the ages of 65 and 74<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have hearing loss, and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing loss is more common in older people due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/age-related-hearing-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a number of factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, health conditions that can contribute to hearing loss such as diabetes and high blood pressure are prevalent amongst older people. In rare cases, age-related hearing loss can be caused by abnormalities of the outer ear or middle ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can actually be quite difficult to distinguish age-related hearing loss from other types of hearing loss, notably, long-term exposure to noise. In fact, experts think that older people experiencing hearing loss usually have a combination of age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss from long-term noise exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other leading causes of hearing loss include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hearinghealthfoundation.org\/hearing-loss-tinnitus-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genetic factors, noise, trauma, ototoxic medications, and viral or bacterial infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst children, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/hearingloss\/data.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genes are responsible for 50% to 60% of cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of hearing loss. Around 20% of babies with genetic hearing loss have a \u201csyndrome\u201d (for example, Down syndrome or Usher syndrome). Infections during pregnancy, environmental causes, and complications after birth are responsible for hearing loss among almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/hearingloss\/data.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% of babies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with hearing loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is thought that because young people are more likely to listen to loud music on their devices and attend noisy social venues, they are at risk of developing hearing issues now and in the future. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of hearing loss is to reduce your exposure to loud noise. This means listening to music and watching TV at a sensible volume, wearing protective ear gear at loud events and when working in noisy workplaces, and reducing the amount of time you\u2019re exposed to any loud noise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Hearing_Device_Facts\"><strong>Hearing Device Facts\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 28.8 million U.S adults could benefit from using a hearing aid. This seems astounding until you learn that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with hearing loss wait an average of seven years before seeking help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People often feel embarrassed about needing a hearing aid and see it as a sign of getting old. It is common for people to deny the severity of their hearing loss in an attempt to postpone the process of getting help, even though they need it. In addition, the high costs of hearing aids (averaging from 4,000 to 6,000 USD!) is yet another hurdle and barrier for someone concerned with their hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyhearing.com\/report\/52814-Hearing-loss-statistics-at-a-glance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the average age of first-time hearing aid wearers is 70 years of age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chchearing.org\/facts-about-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 million people in the United States with hearing loss avoid seeking help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more needs to be done to get rid of the stigma of hearing loss, and encourage people to seek assistance.
